1 . শব্দের প্রথমে ‘e’ বা ‘u’ থাকলে এবং এর উচ্চারণ ইউ’র মত হলে, এর পূর্বে an না বসে a বসে। যেমনঃ
Incorrect: He is ‘an’ European.
Correct: He is ‘a’ European.
Incorrect: There is ‘an’ university in Dhaka.
Correct: There is ‘a’ university in Dhaka.
2. কোন শব্দের প্রথমে ‘h’ থাকলে এবং তা পুরোপুরি উচ্চারিত না হলে তার পূর্বে ‘a’ না বসে ‘an’ বসে। যেমনঃ
Incorrect: He is ‘a’ honest man.
Correct: He is ‘an’ honest man.
Incorrect: He is ‘a’ honours graduate.
Correct: He is ‘an’ honours graduate.
3. সংক্ষিপ্ত শব্দের ( abbreviation) প্রথমে consonant থাকলে এবং এর উচ্চারণ vowel এর মত হলে এর পূর্বে ‘an’ বসে। যেমনঃ
Incorrect: He is ‘a’ M.A.
Correct: He is ‘an’ M.A.
Incorrect: Mr. Salman is a L.L.B.
Correct: Mr. Salman is ‘an’ L.L.B.
কিন্তু সংক্ষিপ্ত শব্দের প্রথম অক্ষর Consonant এর মত উচ্চারিত হলে ‘an’ না বসে ‘a’ বসে। যেমনঃ
Incorrect: He is ‘an’ B.A.
Correct: He is ‘a’ B A.
Incorrect: Mr. Karim is ‘an’ B Sc.
Correct: Mr. Karim is ‘a’ B.Sc.
4. শব্দের প্রথমে ‘o’ থাকলে এবং এর উচ্চারণ ‘ওয়ার’ মত হলে এর পূর্বে ‘a’ বসে। যেমনঃ
Incorrect: I saw ‘an’ one – eyed man .
Correct: I saw ‘a’ one – eyed man.
Incorrect: Give me ‘an’ one – taka note.
Correct: Give me ‘a’ one – taka note.

5. শ্রেণী বা জাতি বুঝাতে Singular Common Noun এর পূর্বে the বসে । যেমনঃ
Incorrect: A cow is a useful animal.
Correct: The cow is a useful animal.
কিন্তু মানুষ জাতির পূর্বে the বসে না । যেমনঃ
Incorrect: The man is mortal.
Correct: Man is mortal.
6. জাতি বা সম্প্রদায় বুঝাতে Adjective এর পূর্বে The বসে এবং এক্ষেত্রে verb এর Plural হয়। যেমনঃ
Incorrect: The virtuous is happy.
Correct: The virtuous are happy.
Incorrect: The rich is not always happy.
Correct: The rich are not always happy.
7. নদী , সাগর মহাসাগর, ইত্যাদির নামের পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ
Incorrect: Padma is a big river.
Correct: The Padma is a big river.
Incorrect: Pacific is the deepest sea.
Correct: The Pacific is the deepest sea.
8. পর্বত শ্রেণী, দ্বীপপুঞ্জ ইত্যাদি নামের পূর্বে the বসে। যেমনঃ
Incorrect: Himalayas are to the north of India.
Correct: the Himalayas are to the north of India.
Incorrect: Andamans are to the south of India.
Correct: the Andamans are to the south of India .
কিন্তু একটি মাত্র পর্বত বা দ্বীপের নামের পূর্বে The বসে না। যেমনঃ
Incorrect: The Everest is the highest peak in the world.
Correct: Everest is the highest peak in the world.
9 . কতগুলো অদ্বিতীয় জিনিস, চন্দ্র-সূর্য পৃথিবী আকাশ ইত্যাদি নামের পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ
Incorrect: Earth is round.
Correct: The Earth is round.
Incorrect: Sun gives us light.
Correct: The sun gives us light.
10. সংবাদপত্র, ধর্মগ্রন্থ এবং মহাকাব্যের পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ
Incorrect: I read Ittefaq daily.
Correct: I read the Ittefaq daily.
Incorrect: Quran is a holy book to the Muslim.
Correct: The Quran is a holy book to the Muslim.
11. বিশেষ অর্থপূর্ণ দেশ বা স্থানের নামের পূর্বে The বসে। যেমনঃ
Incorrect: Punjab is a land of five rivers.
Correct: The Punjab is a land of five rivers.
12. Adjective এর Superlative Degree এর পূর্বে The এবং এর পর of বা in বসে। যেমনঃ
Incorrect: He is best boy in the class.
Correct: He is the best boy in the class.
Incorrect: He is wisest man in the village.
Correct: He is the wisest man in the village.
13. একই ব্যক্তি দুই পদবীর অধিকারী হলে প্রথমটির পূর্বে the বসে । যেমনঃ
The Headmaster and secretary is coming.
কিন্তু দুই ব্যক্তি দুই পদবির অধিকারী হলে উভয়ের পূর্বে the বসে। যেমনঃ
Incorrect: The headmaster and secretary are coming.
Correct: The headmaster and the secretary are coming.
